Explorations Exhibit (2022)

Launched in March 2022, Exploration Exhibits was open until the end of December 2022. Developed in partnership with Research Casting International this exhibit showcased a variety of impressive dinosaur specimen.

The Carnivorous Dinosaurs: Theropods
The Carnivorous Dinosaurs: Theropods

Theropods are made up of various species of meat-eating dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus rex, Albertosaurus, and Velociraptor are some of the most well known members of the theropod family. These two-legged creatures are the ancient ancestors of modern-day birds, so if you want to see a close relative of dinosaurs, just go outside and look at the sky.

The Horned Dinosaurs: Ceratopsia
The Horned Dinosaurs: Ceratopsia

These plant-eating dinosaurs are known for their unique facial horns and distinctive frills. With larges heads and protruding frills to support, horned dinosaurs developed a short, strong neck. A beak at the front of their jaws made it easier to munch on woody plant material all day long.

The Armoured Dinosaurs: Thyreophorans

These dinosaurs had built-in armor to protect themselves against attacking predators. Dermal armor, like the spikes of Stegosaurus, is actually bone embedded into the skin layer. These spikes could be used for display, thermal regulation, or protection. Many armored dinosaurs also had tail clubs that could be used to deter hungry carnivores.

The Long-Necked Dinosaurs: Sauropods
The Long-Necked Dinosaurs: Sauropods

The largest animals to ever walk the earth, Sauropods are known for their impressive size and remarkable long necks. Their small heads and simple teeth were designed to ingest a steady stream of plant material. Rather than waste energy, Sauropods preferred to stand in one spot eating whatever plants they could reach.
